Daisy Wheel PrinterYou may or may not have heard of the daisy wheel printers of the past, but they were important in the printing industry and still linger in typewriter circles today. The daisy wheel printer was a printer that produced some of the highest quality type available in its time.Quality Was Everything Even though the daisy wheel printers were not the most convenient to use, they did produce high quality print. Quality daisy wheel printers would produce what was called letter-quality print. That meant you could get typewriter quality print from a computer. The more popular dot matrix printers of the time could get close but could not produce what even the cheapest daisy wheel printers could do. On the other hand, those printers ran several thousand dollars. How It Worked The daisy wheel printer made use of a small wheel. The wheel had the letters and characters available raised up in either plastic or metal. The wheel would turn, line up the letter, and then push it to the paper. The daisy wheel printer worked similarly to the typewriter, which is why there are some lovers of this old printer today. The one big improvement, though, as that you could change fonts. To do so, you simply had to change out the wheels to the appropriate wheel. They, though, have to be happy with used daisy wheel printers since few if any are made today. When Was This Again? The daisy wheel printer was at the peak of its popularity during the 1980’s. Even at that time, though, they were behind the dot matrix printer in popularity. Even though they offered higher quality print than the dot matrix cousins, the cost of a daisy-wheel printert was significantly higher. The pay off was not worth the cost to many who needed printers for their home or business. What Happened To Them? Like many forms of the technology, the daisy wheel printer was eventually squeezed out. Laser printers, inkjet printers, and all the other technology taken for granted today was easier to use, produced higher quality printing, and were cheaper than the daisy wheel. Eventually, they were just pushed out of the market and into history and antique malls.
